  10.        This chapter lists supplemental information to the _I_R_I_S
  11.        _S_o_f_t_w_a_r_e _I_n_s_t_a_l_l_a_t_i_o_n _G_u_i_d_e.  The information listed here is
  12.        product- and release-specific; use it with the Installation
  13.        Guide to install this product.
  14.  
  15.        2.1  _G_e_n_e_r_a_l__I_n_s_t_a_l_l_a_t_i_o_n__I_n_f_o_r_m_a_t_i_o_n

  17.        If you are installing this software from the Desktop Special
  18.        Edition CD you may not wish to install all the products.
  19.        There are three methods you can use to help determine what
  20.        software products you wish to install.  You can insert the
  21.        CD and read the release notes for each product (refer to the
  22.        CD installation booklet included with the CD for information
  23.        on how to do this). A second method is to insert the CD,
  24.        double-click on the icon and click "Custom Installation" in
  25.        the Software Manager application to browse the products on
  26.        the CD. For more complete information we recommend that you
  27.        first install only the WhatsNew product and the
  28.        1_1_DesktopSpecialEdition release notes. The WhatsNew
  29.        product will display extensive information about all the
  30.        products on the Desktop Special Edition CD the first time
  31.        you log into your system.
  32.  
  33.        If you already have a World Wide Web Server installed on
  34.        your system, we advise you to read through the release notes
  35.        for the OutBox product before you install your Desktop
  36.        Special Edition software. If you are running early releases
  37.        of the Netscape Communications Server (prior to version
  38.        1.12), Silicon Graphics recommends that you upgrade to
  39.        version 1.12. It is important to read the release notes for
  40.        version 1.12 prior to installing it.

  42.        If you are a software developer and have il_dev already
  43.        installed on your system, refer to chapter 3, Known Problems
  44.        and Workarounds.
  45.  
  46.        Do not install the Showcase 3.3.3 product if you are running
  47.        in the Japanese, Korean or Chinese locales.  Instead,
  48.        install the version of Showcase that appears in the latest
  49.        version of the language module for your locale. If you have
  50.        already installed Showcase 3.3.2 or Showcase 3.3.3 you must
  51.        install patch 1005 to restore the CID font capability.

  77.        To determine whether your system has the Desktop Special
  78.        Edition software pre-installed on the hard disk use the
  79.        Software Manager tool, click on the "Manage Installed"
  80.        button and look in the list of software for the
  81.        "1_1_DesktopSpecialEdition" product.  The presence of this
  82.        product on your hard disk indicates that you have the
  83.        Desktop Special Edition software pre-installed on your
  84.        system.

  86.        If you have the Desktop Special Edition software pre-
  87.        installed on your system the following information applies:
  88.  
  89.           +o You may have purchased additional software products
  90.             included with your system (e.g. Indy Modeller,
  91.             WebFORCE). In order to determine which additional
  92.             products have been installed on your system refer to
  93.             the WhatsNew pages by selecting "What's New?" on the
  94.             Find menu of the Toolchest.
  95.  
  96.           +o There may be additional products on your Desktop
  97.             Special Edition CD that have not been pre-installed on
  98.             your hard disk. To install these products refer to the
  99.             CD installation booklet included with the CD. These
  100.             products may require a license. To obtain temporary
  101.             licenses send electronic mail (email) to
  102.             demolicense@sgi.com. The content of the message is
  103.             ignored.  You will receive an automatic email response
  104.             to your license request.  Alternatively, you can use
  105.             the World Wide Web to request temporary licenses from
  106.             http://www.sgi.com/Products/Evaluation/.

  108.           +o The PC-NFS Server Components product is included on the
  109.             Desktop Special Edition CD but may not been pre-
  110.             installed on your hard disk. In order to use or
  111.             configure this product you must first install the NFS
  112.             product.  If you do not have the NFS product, it may be
  113.             purchased from your local Silicon Graphics
  114.             representative.

  116.           +o Several software patches have been pre-installed on
  117.             your hard disk. There are several additional patches
  118.             that can be installed from the CD. Refer to section 2.6

  143.        5.3 that are being upgraded to run the Desktop Special
  144.        Edition software.

  173.        6.1 that are being upgraded to run the Desktop Special

  176.           +o Desktop Special Edition is supported on IRIX 5.3 and
  177.             6.1, but the digital media tools contained in the
  178.             dmedia_tools product do not support MPEG and Quicktime
  179.             movie playback on IRIX 6.1. This limitation will
  180.             prohibit certain sample movies from playing.
